What people use it for
Skin brightening, liver support, and the oxidative wear of aging.
The signal
Every cell uses glutathione to neutralize the reactive byproducts of normal metabolism and to process toxins. Levels decline with age, and older adults with low glutathione show measurably higher oxidative stress [1].
How it works
It donates electrons to neutralize reactive molecules before they damage proteins, membranes, and DNA, then gets recycled and used again. The liver runs especially heavily on it, which is why it's central to how the body clears alcohol and medications.
What the research shows
Randomized trials show supplementation can raise the body's stores: six months of oral glutathione increased levels in blood cells [2], and liposomal forms showed similar results with markers of immune function moving alongside [3]. Work in older adults suggests restoring glutathione improves markers of oxidative stress [1]. Trials tying supplementation to how people feel day to day are still thin.
What people get wrong
That all forms are equal. Plain oral glutathione was long thought useless because the gut breaks it down; the trials above suggest stores do rise with sustained use, but form and route still change how much gets where. And that it's only a "detox" molecule: the antioxidant role in normal metabolism is the main job.
