What people use it for
Two very different things: hospitals use it to induce labor, and the wellness world uses nasal versions chasing connection, intimacy, and social ease.
The signal
Your brain releases oxytocin during touch, sex, birth, and breastfeeding. It's the chemistry of attachment, which is what made a sprayable version so appealing.
How it works
It binds oxytocin receptors in the uterus (the labor effect) and throughout the brain's social circuitry (the bonding effect). The two uses share a molecule and almost nothing else.
What the research shows
For labor, it's one of the oldest and most established drugs in medicine, in routine delivery-room use [1]. For the social effects, there are hundreds of nasal-spray studies, and the honest summary is mixed: a recent meta-analysis across mental health conditions found small and inconsistent effects [2]. The gap between the hormone's natural role and what a spray achieves is the story.
What people get wrong
That spraying the bonding hormone bottles the feeling. Natural oxytocin release happens in context, with the rest of the brain participating. The trials say the spray alone does much less than the nickname "love hormone" promises.
