You started the copper peptide product three weeks ago, and your skin is genuinely worse now than when you started. Before you abandon it: this has a name in the skincare community, it's a documented pattern, and most of the time the right move is to keep going. Here's why.

first, the regulatory part you have to know

GHK-Cu (copper peptide) compounded for prescription is on the FDA's Category 2 list, which means US compounding pharmacies can't legally make it right now. That's been the rule since 2023. The FDA announced in February 2026 that they intend to move it back to Category 1, but as of this writing, the formal paperwork hasn't published. Until it does, compounded GHK-Cu isn't legally prescribable through any US telehealth platform or 503A pharmacy. (Important: GHK-Cu also exists as a cosmetic ingredient in non-prescription skincare products, which is a separate regulatory category. Those products remain available over the counter, and most of this article applies to the cosmetic version.)

You did your research. You read about copper peptides being one of the most well-studied skincare actives. You found a respected product, maybe a 5% GHK-Cu serum from a real brand, maybe a compounded version through some channel. You started using it twice a day, religiously. You took before photos because of course you did.

Week one, nothing dramatic.

Week two, your skin started to look... different. Maybe a little more sensitive. A few small blemishes in places you don't usually break out. Fine lines that you didn't notice before looking slightly more visible. By the end of week three, your skin genuinely looks worse than when you started. Texture is rougher. Tone is splotchier. You're starting to wonder if you're having an allergic reaction.

This has a name. The skincare community calls it the copper uglies. It's a recognized pattern with copper peptide products, particularly at higher concentrations and particularly in the first 2-6 weeks of use. Most articles about GHK-Cu don't mention it. Don't add multiple new products at once. If you're going through a copper uglies phase and you also recently switched cleansers, started a new sunscreen, added a vitamin C serum, you don't know what's causing what. Add one variable at a time so you can isolate.

Protect the barrier. Use a gentle, non-active moisturizer alongside. Keep the rest of the routine boring. Don't try to fix the irritation with more actives.

what cosmetic vs compounded would actually mean

A note on the cosmetic GHK-Cu versus compounded prescription GHK-Cu distinction, because it matters for what you can expect.

The cosmetic products available over the counter generally use GHK-Cu at concentrations from 0.5% to 5%, formulated according to cosmetic regulations. They're real products with real GHK-Cu in them, and the research that supports the skincare use case is largely based on similar cosmetic-grade concentrations.

A compounded prescription version (which doesn't currently exist legally in the US because of Category 2) would be capable of higher concentrations and different delivery forms (topical creams with enhanced penetration, possibly intradermal mesotherapy applications) that the cosmetic regulatory category doesn't permit. The hypothetical clinical version would also be sterile and dose-titrated by a clinician.

For most people pursuing copper peptides for skincare goals, the cosmetic version is what's been studied in the published cosmetic literature and is what you should expect realistic effects from. The compounded version, if and when reclassification makes it available, would primarily change the options available to clinicians treating specific conditions, not necessarily the everyday skincare use case.
